The Headline:

The ongoing drama that is the fight for the fifth rotation spot has one less candidate tonight as one time top pitching prospect Matt Riley was taded to the Texas Rangers for another one time prospect Ramon Nivar, a OF/If who is slated to start in AAA.

The Rant:

WTF! Just when you think the Orioles would have done something stupid like putting Riley in the bullpen to give a rotation spot to Chen, they go and do something even more stupid and trade a golden left arm for a guy who will never play a game in an O's uniform.

So what if Riley had an attitude problem! Do you really think that Clemens, Pedro and the Unit were all nice guys who were humbled by their extrodinary talent? Hell no! They went to the mound with spunk and they knew their stuff was good. Maybe Riley was too hot headed off the field and that was a distraction but at the end of the 04 season, he put up the best numbers of his career.

Steve Davis on WBAL radio made one hell of a point tonight in regards to what I like to call "The Miller Effect". Ray Miller is arguably the best pitching coach in the bigs today. He was expected to turn a young, flailing staff into a solid 5 man rotation over a little more then half a season. Well, in 90+ games last year, he did just that. Riley pitched the best he ever had under the guidance of Ray Miller. In september he went 2-1 with a 2.46 ERA over 29 2/3 IP.

Sure 4 out of 5 of the teams were mediocre at best. Sure he gave up 3 runs to Boston en route to a ND, but regardless of the talent he faced, at the end of a season filled with so much promise and so much more dissapointment, he was a "ray" of light looking at a bright future.

Is the person that wrote this an Oriole fan?

Anyway, The O's wouldn't have traded Riley unless Miller signed off on it. Anyway, I'm an Oriole fan and I'm sick of Riley and his attitude, potential be damned. All Riley had to do was have a decent spring and he would have made the club as the fifth starter, easily. But Riley screwed around, had a *horrible* spring, and the Orioles were left with two options: put Riley on the roster in place of someone who actually earned a spot, or deal him. IMO they took the right route and dealt him for what they could get. So it goes, that's the game of baseball.

Yes I am an Orioles Fan.

My commentary / Rant was intended to show a fans perspective (1 of many) when a team lets go a left handed young arm with scores of potential. I am not disagreeing with his bad spring, his poor attitude or the years of fans and the organization waiting around for him to mature.

We got nothing for him. Nada , Niet, Zip. If either of those players break the bigs this year i'll be shocked.

I always welcome comments.

I definately hear where you're coming from, and I know I'll sound like a kool-aid drinker, but it sounds like they couldn't get much for Riley, unfortunately. I'm just glad he's not clogging up a roster spot instead of someone who earned their way there, I think that would have set a bad example for the young'ns.

Riley might make it, he might not. It'll suck if/when he makes it with another team, but I think the 7 or 8 years the Orioles invested in him were enough. For some reason he didn't have the heart or effort to make it as an oriole anymore...

BTW, you hang out at [URL REMOVED]? I'm Pipman over there...

I wish him well.. as well. :-)

I still would have liked him in the bullpen, or Chen for that matter. Chen has pitched extremely well this spring but we all know that doesnt always translate into a good season. Lets hope Riley doesn't get a new nickname.... Schilling.

Chen grabbed the 5th spot in the rotation after his great spring.

I'm not sure why my post up above had the URL removed... maybe someone thought it was spamming? :-P Anyway, I was talking about the big Oriole site with the initials OH. I have nothing to do with it, just hang out there.

Apparently it wouldn't let me post the URL because I wasn't registered, but since I've grown a liking for this site I went ahead and registered.

The web site is orioleshangout.com Pretty decent site. I mostly read the game recaps and hang out on the message boards.
